Requiem For A Day Off

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Requiem For A Dream have very little to do with each other. One’s a feel-good 80’s teen movie about coming to grips with growing up. The other is a harrowing portrait of the tragic effects of drug addiction. Yet somehow, when combined, the results are strangely awesome.

10 Comedies That Never Get Old

There are some movies you can just watch over and over again...

Billy Madison

This film came out at a time when Adam Sandler was a god. This was a time when peeing your pants was cool, snack packs ruled the world, and of course, O'Doyle rules! What a great time it was, we miss you Sandler.

Review: There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Blood is an epic American Classic.

This film follows a story of an oil man named Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) in the early 20th century. This flawless screenplay by writer and director Paul Anderson, rediscovers the blood, beauty, and secularism of early American capitalism. Based loosely after Upton Sinclair's novel "Oil!", There Will Be Blood is a strikingly vicious and honest film.

Review: Cloverfield

So I just caught the premiere of Cloverfield here in Boston and before I begin my review I must say this:

Yes, you see the monster. A lot.

Now that I've got that off the table I'll give you the low down on J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) new monster flick. Now the key word here is "new." These monster godzilla-ish movies are nothing new to film enthusiast, but as Abrams and Co. wipe the dust off this classic genre, they also add new ways of presenting it. Dare I say they have set a new standard?

With the exception of the characters sometimes having unrealistic luck and a slightly cliche beginning, Cloverfield is truly enjoyable. Even working in an outdated genre, director Matt Reeves was able to break the shackles of the traditional monster flick. This is mostly done because of the camcorder style filming. In fact, the entire film is shot through a characters camcorder (think Blair Witch Project, but better).

As the film opened I was nervous that the camera movement would distract me from the movie itself, but instead it was the film that distracted me from the camera movement. The intensity and velocity of the story makes the last hour feel like 20 minutes and that shaking camera a non-factor.

Granted I was still a little dizzy leaving the theater...

Besides being "different" the camcorder style filming provides other advantages for Cloverfield. This includes focusing the entire film around one group of friends. There are no other perspectives. This makes the movie uniquely unpredictable and addictive. You don't see the monster's beginnings, you don't see the president, and you don't see Dennis Quaid. Instead you see several relatively unknown actors trying to get the hell away from that thing.

Altogether Cloverfield is a fantastic film that challenges its genre. This is the kind of movie that is meant to be fun and meant to be enjoyed. This is not an epic film, instead it is a raw film. There is no montages or background music. All you have is just five friends and a monster. Do not expect a traditional ending either, remember were dealing with J.J. Abrams here.

What Is This Movie?

Some of you may have heard about this new untitled movie coming out on January 18th. It is produced by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, Mission Impossible 3) and is some kind of monster movie. You may also know it as project "Cloverfield" or "The Untitled J.J. Abrams Project". Most details have been kept secret, but we do know that it takes place in New York city and apparently follows a group of friends after NYC gets "attacked". The trailer is amazing and from it you can see that the film is made to look like it was shot from camcorders (but not in a Blair Witch kind of way). The style of filming makes the trailer really intense and almost scary. You can watch the trailer below, but I would recommend going here to watch the high definition version.

Across the Universe

Is this the new Yellow Submarine? I saw previews for this movie the other day and from what it looks like its trippy, has all Beatles songs in it, and looks AMAZING. It is said to be a Musical/Drama which I don't usually do, but the whole "whoaaaa trippyyyy mann" factor plays a role in my final decision.

Give it a look:

Most Anticipated Movies for the End of the Summer

The summer is almost coming to an end, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. A few awesome movies will be coming out towards the end of the Summer that you should keep your eye out for.

Superbad
This movie looks absolutely hilarious! Jonah Hill stars in the crazy comedy (you know, the guy who screams like a girl in Accepted) along with Michael Cera. These two guys want to throw a party because they are graduating, but things go a little wrong.

In theaters: August 17th

Balls of Fury
A crazy movie with the theme of Ping Pong. All you have to know about this is that it deals with the amazing sport of Ping Pong and it has Christopher Walken in it. That is all.

In theaters: August 31st

Rush Hour 3
Okay, I'll be honest here. This might be a hit or miss because it is the third Rush Hour, and we all know how those can go. Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan once again hit the streets, but Paris this time around. It's worth a look or at least one of those movies you sneak into because you don't want to pay.

In theaters: August 10th

"I Didn't Know That!" - Movie Trivia

Old School
The beer that Will Ferrel drinks during the Mitch-a-Palooza scene is O'Doul's (non-alcoholic).

Finding Nemo
The boy in the dentist's waiting room is reading a "Mr. Incredible" comic book, a reference to the forthcoming Pixar film The Incredibles(2004).

Oceans Eleven
In nearly every scene Rusty's in, he's eating something. According to Brad Pitt, this is because the whole gang (his character in particular) would be so busy that they'd rarely be able to eat; it was decided that Rusty would just eat all the time. He first mentioned this when he was eating after having worked all day without a break for lunch and was hungry, because he thought it would be a good character trait for Rusty Ryan as well.

American Pie
To replicate an erection in one scene, the crew cooked a sausage, stuck it on a pencil, and wrapped it in aluminum foil. It was still warm when it was placed between 'Jason Biggs' ' legs.

Spider Man
Several Spider-Man costumes were created at a cost of up to $100,000 each. Four were stolen from the set in early April of 2001 and Columbia Pictures posted a $25,000 reward for their return. The costumes were not returned.
