How a Double-edge Razor Can Change Your Life

Alright guys, the fellas over at Zen Habits came up with a pretty informative article on how changing your razor could help not only yourself, but the environment too. They also teach you how to use a double-edge razor just in case you didn't know how which is good for me because I didn't have the slightest clue.

1. Improve Your Health. By far, the predominant reason men find traditional wet shaving is the promise of healthier skin. Fed up with razor burn, ingrown hairs, redness and bumps, many are searching for alternate methods to achieve a smooth face. Not only can wet shaving help with shaving problems, your face will thank you for the extra attention. Whereas the normal canned goo and aftershaves are made with chemicals and low cost ingredients, traditional products are full of nutrients and skin-friendly moisturizers. Your face will look better and feel healthier.

2. Save Money. I was drawn to wet shaving for the economical benefits after being increasingly frustrated with the multi-blade cartridge racket. Outside of the $100 initial investment, the daily consumables cost pennies a day. For instance, where a marketing driven cartridge razor can cost over $3 a piece, a typical double edge blade costs a quarter, a savings of over $140 per year on blades alone.

3. Reduce Your Environmental Impact. With traditional wet shaving, the only waste is the lather you wash down the drain and a simple metal blade, which is easily recycled. Shaving soap bowls can easily be reused if you buy refills. Even the lather down the drain is friendlier to the environment as it’s just soap rather than chemical ridden goop. Try a straight razor (yes, they’re still used) if you want to reduce your footprint even more.

4. Improve Your Wellbeing. It is well known that when you look your best, you feel better. Starting the morning off with an excellent shave, followed up by a quality aftershave leaves you feeling clean, professional, and smelling good. It consistently amazes me how good my day starts when I take a few minutes to treat myself to a good shave. I feel awake, more energy, and confident to tackle the day.

5. It’s fun! I had to add one more reason. It may be surprising, but for the reasons above, you may even find shaving to be fun. Scrubbing your face with a badger haired shaving brush with nice smelling lather is luxurious every time. You may also find yourself proud of learning to use traditional shaving items, which do require some skill to use correctly. You may even venture into the world of straight razor shaving and learn to shave the way your great-grandfather shaved, bringing to your life a sense of tradition and connection to years past.

A Quick How-To
Now that I have you convinced, you’re probably wondering how this all works. With apologies to the ladies, this brief guide will be directed at the gentlemen. However, fear not, the same basic approach can be used for hair removal of the female variety as well (my wife is a wet shaver!).

1. Prep Your Beard. One of the keys to any proper shave, regardless of the tools, is good preparation. There are a number of methods, but the key is to sufficiently hydrate the beard. Wet hair equals weaker hair, which means it’s easier to cut and results in less pulling and irritation. One of the easiest methods is to shave right after your shower giving your beard a few minutes to absorb the water.

2. Create and Apply The Lather. The easiest method to creating lather is to place an almond sized dollop of cream in a bowl. Take your pre-wetted brush and swirl the cream in the bowl until you get thick meringue-like lather. Use the brush to apply the lather to your wetted face using a swirling or painting motion depending on your preference.

3. Shaving the Beard. Cartridge razors are designed to remove as much hair as possible at once. This leads to a very quick shave, but also a poor one. A double edge razor is the normal razor of choice for the wet shaver, primarily due to the quality of the shave and ease of use. With a double edge razor, gradual beard reduction is the key, and typically results in 3 passes. Sure, this may take a bit longer, but the results are worth it. The key to mastering the DE razor is to use very light strokes at the proper angle. It will take a little experimenting to get it right, but anyone can learn to use one.

4. Post-Shave. Now that you have a smooth face, it’s beneficial to follow-up with an aftershave. This helps reduce any irritation that may have resulted, especially in the early stages of learning, and protects the skin during the day. Properly hydrated skin is healthier and looks better.

As I said, this guide is brief. You may very well find success using these simplified instructions. However, if you‘d like more information, there is an amazing amount of knowledge online regarding traditional wet shaving, from product recommendations to help with specific problems. One such place is badgerandblade.com, the largest online community devoted to wet shaving and men’s grooming (ladies welcome).

Movies on the Fly

The other day I was introduced to this website that gives you the chance to watch the newest movies (as well as older ones) by streaming them right to your computer. The website is setup like a forum and people collectively update the links to movies around the web such as Google Video, YouTube, and many others.

Just to give you an example I watched Superbad for the 37th time through the site and I was very satisfied with the quality and speed.

Go watch a movie at Movie-Forumz.org.

Not many people know that Facebook has built a feature into the site that allows you to easily print out all your friends phone numbers in one easy click.

All you have to do is go here and print out that page (assuming you have a facebook account), and you instantly have everyone's contact information once again. No more creating stupid groups that are entitled, "Dropped my Phone in the Toilet, Need Numbers!" Just take the numbers that you want and your all set to go!

How to Fall Asleep Faster

It's not news that many of us aren't getting enough sleep, but BBC News offers several tips from a director of Clinical Sleep Research for getting to sleep when your head hits the pillow that you may not have heard before. For example:

Tensing until your muscles hurt may not seem the most sensible way of getting to sleep, but it's a popular and proven cognitive technique. Systematically tense each muscle group in turn until it starts to hurt... and then let go. This creates a warm feeling of relaxation, and any tension should flow away. The theory is that with physical relaxation comes mental calmness.
You may have heard of this method (Progressive Muscle Relaxation) before, but there was one tip that was completely new to me:
Just repeating "the" could be the solution. It's known as a blocking strategy, another cognitive technique. The aim is to stop the mind racing.
Repeating a simple word like "the" at irregular interval blocks other thoughts coming into your head.

No More Paying for 411, Google's Got You Covered

I've been using this service for the past few months and it has been nothing but nice to me. First of all it's free, which is already better than most phone companies. Next, they even connect you for free and also send you a text message with their address and phone number. This was a big help for me because odds are, I always try to remember the number, and it never works out.

You can use the service by calling 1-800-GOOG-411.

Watch the video for a quick tutorial on how to use it.

10 Ways To Sharpen Your Brain

1. Read a Book
Pick a book on an entirely new subject. Read a novel set in Egypt. Not only will your brain get a workout by imagining different time periods, cultures and peoples, you will also have interesting stories to tell about your reading, what it makes you think of and the connections you draw between modem life and the words.

2. Play Games
Games are a wonderful way to tease and challenge your brain. Suduko, crosswords and electronic games can all improve your brain’s speed and memory. These games rely on logic, word skills, math and more. These games are also fun. You’ll get benefit more by doing these games a little bit every day-spend 15 minutes or so, not hours.

3. Use Your Opposite Hand
Spend the day doing things with your non-dominant hand. If you are left-handed, open doors with your right hand. If you are right-handed, try using your keys with your left. This simple task will cause your brain to lay down some new pathways and rethink daily tasks.

Learn Phone Numbers
Our modem phones remember every number that calls them. No one memorizes phone numbers anymore, but it is a great memory Skill. Learn a new phone number everyday.

5. Eat for Your Brain
Your brain needs you to eat healthy fats. Focus on fish oils from wild salmon, nuts such as walnuts, seeds such as flax seed and olive oil. Eat more of these foods and less saturated fats. Eliminate transfats completely from your diet.

6. Break the Routine
We love our routines. We have hobbies and pastimes that we could do for hours on end. But the more something is second nature, the less our brains have to work to do it. To really help your brain stay young, challenge it. Change routes to the grocery store, use your opposite hand to open doors and eat dessert first. All this will force your brain to wake up from habits and pay attention again.

7. Go a Different way
Drive or walk a different way to wherever you go. This little change in routine helps the brain practice special memory and directions. Try different side streets go through stores in a different order anything to change your route.

8. Learn a New Skill
Learning a new skill works multiple areas of the brain. Your memory comes into play, you learn new movements and you associate things differently. Reading Shakespeare, learning to cook and building an airplane out of tooth picks all will challenge your brain and give you something to think about.

9. Make Lists
Lists are wonderful. Making lists helps us to associate items with one another. Make a list of all the places you have traveled. Make a list of the tastiest foods you have eaten. Make a list of the best presents you have been given. Make one list every day to jog your memory and make new connections. But don’t become too reliant on them. Make your grocery list, but then try to shop without it.

10. Choose a new skill
Find something that captivates you that you can do easily in your home and doesn’t cost too much. Photography with a digital camera, learning to draw, learning a musical instrument learning new cooking styles, or writing are all great choices.

How to Get More Juice From Your Laptop Battery

College Kids,

I have a cheap laptop and the battery on it is always dying. Are there anyways to make it last longer?

Kevin
20 Years Old
Fairview, FL

Kevin,

We have all been there. Your laptop battery is dying and there is no outlet around. It is a very frustrating experience, so we found some tips to make that charge last longer.

Only run programs you need - Having multiple programs running at the same time seems like an unnecessary way to drain your battery. Instead consider running only one program at a time. In other words, if you're browsing the web don't leave your email client running in the background, check it when you're done surfing the web.

Dim your screen
- One of the fastest ways you can kill your battery is by leaving your screen brightness high. Dim your screen to the lowest level you can possibly manage.

Disable unnecessary programs
- You know all those programs that automatically run on startup? You probably don't need them or use most of them anyways. So just turn them off before they eat into your battery resources.

Keep operating temps down
- Batteries perform better when they're cool. Clean your air vents and avoid placing your laptop in a position that will restrict airflow (such as your lap).

Limit external devices
- USB devices or anything else you have plugged in uses battery resources even when they're not in use. Now is probably not the best time to try out your new USB hand warmer.

Turn off wireless and Bluetooth
Turning off your Bluetooth and wireless won't save you a whole lot of power but in certain situations every bit counts.

How To Cure A Hangover

Sleep. Rest is your best friend at this point to give your body a recover. It is best to stay in bed so call in to work if you have to, tell them you have the stomach flu. You will sound so horrible on the phone they may believe you (unless they saw you at the bar, not a good idea then).

  1. Replenish your body with fruit juice and water.
  2. Avoid caffeine. A weak cup of coffee may be okay but a lot of caffeine will continue to dehydrate you, the opposite of what you want right now.
  3. Drink orange juice for Vitamin C.
  4. Drink a sports drink like Gatorade or Powerade.
  5. Eat mineral rich food like pickles or canned fish.
  6. In Poland, drinking pickle juice is a common remedy.
  7. Drink a Bloody Mary. While the popular phrase “hair of the dog that bit you” may sound logical with a shot of whiskey left in the bottle next to your bed, it’s only temporary. Try a Bloody Mary instead, while your blood is dealing with the new alcohol it is ignoring the old and in the mean time tomato juice and celery are full of vitamins. If you drank the last of the vodka make Virgin Mary.
  8. Take a shower, switching between cold and hot water.

College Kid Tip Of The Day: Know Your Professor

Are you going to have a tough semester and want to stay ahead of the pack?

My advice: get to know your professors. During crunch time there is no one else who can help you out more. The best way to do this is by introducing yourself to your professor. From there you should keep your relationship active and do not be afraid to ask for extra help.

This will help you in the long run because if you are in trouble and maybe need an extension or some kind of break, they are the only ones who can help you out. On the other hand, if you are the kid in the back who never says anything, your professor is going to think "who is this kid" and "why should I help them". Plus, most professors are really cool.

Cheers! It is the Weekend!

Places To Watch TV Online

College Kids,

Do you know of any good sites to watch TV online?

Seth

20 Years Old

Heatherbrook, AZ

Seth,

There are many of sites out there but there are three really good ones that we think you will like:

TV Links - TV Links is our favorite and most recommended. It has a great selection of American TV shows and movies. They usually load fast and are decent quality.

Peekvid - Peekvid comes in a close second. It too has a great selection of shows and movies. Quality and reliability can vary depending on which site they link off of.

Channel Chooser - Channel Chooser is the smoothest of all the sites. Unfortunately its selection is very different than the other two sites. Of course, If you are looking for something different this is the site to be at.

Cheers!

Making Your Dorm Room Look Nice

College Kids,

I really want to make my dorm look nice and be comfortable. Do you have any tips?

Mark

19 Years Old

Nassau Bay, TX

Mark,

Well Mark, we certainly do not blame you for wanting to hook your room up. Fortunately for you, us college kids happen to be experts at making small dirty dorm rooms look real nice. Here are our ideas:

Posters - Posters are the most essential element to giving you room life. They add your own personality and hide the ugly white walls. When your shopping, look for posters you have not seen before. You do not want to have the same Family Guy poster that three other people on your floor have. Try finding large poster stores or going online, I personally recommend allposters.com.
Good Lighting - You can not have a relaxing environment with those awful fluorescent lights they put in. Try bringing a nice lamp that gives off a softer light. You probably also want to bring a black light, Christmas lights, and a lava lamp as well. Just make sure your school lets you have lava lamps (I got mine confiscated freshman year).
Plants - Us college kids are big fans of house plants. They always add to the environment of your room and make it a more relaxing place. Plus, you can not beat the smell.
Fish/Reptile Tank - If you can handle the responsibility, having a fish or a reptile tank is a great add on to any dorm room. They are great to look at and it is always nice to have some kind of pet.
Beer Bottle Collection - Yes we know you see this everywhere, but we think it can add a lot to your room. Just make sure that your collection consist of quality beers.
Beanbag - Beanbags are the all purpose chair and they are amazing... enough said.
Good Rug - If you do not have a carpeted floor you are definitely going to want to get a good rug.
Plenty Of Fans - A lot of dorms do not have A/C, so unless you live way up north your going to want to bring something to keep you cool.
Things From Home - Whether it be pictures, art, shells, books, cards, yearbooks, or whatever, nothing makes you feel more at home than this stuff.

I hope this helped! Let us know if you have any other ways you make your room seem like home.

Cheers!

Ten Habits of Highly Effective Brains

Enjoy...

  1. Learn what is the "It" in "Use It or Lose It". A basic understanding will serve you well to appreciate your brain's beauty as a living and constantly-developing dense forest with billions of neurons and synapses.
  2. Take care of your nutrition. Did you know that the brain only weights 2% of body mass but consumes over 20% of the oxygen and nutrients we intake? As a general rule, you don't need expensive ultra-sophisticated nutritional supplements, just make sure you don't stuff yourself with the "bad stuff".
  3. Remember that the brain is part of the body. Things that exercise your body can also help sharpen your brain: physical exercise enhances neurogenesis.
  4. Practice positive, future-oriented thoughts until they become your default mindset and you look forward to every new day in a constructive way. Stress and anxiety, no matter whether induced by external events or by your own thoughts, actually kills neurons and prevent the creation of new ones. You can think of chronic stress as the opposite of exercise: it prevents the creation of new neurons.
  5. Thrive on Learning and Mental Challenges. The point of having a brain is precisely to learn and to adapt to challenging new environments. Once new neurons appear in your brain, where they stay in your brain and how long they survive depends on how you use them. "Use It or Lose It" does not mean "do crossword puzzle number 1,234,567". It means, "challenge your brain often with fundamentally new activities".
  6. We are (as far as we know) the only self-directed organisms in this planet. Aim high. Once you graduate from college, keep learning. The brain keeps developing, no matter your age, and it reflects what you do with it.
  7. Explore, travel. Adapting to new locations forces you to pay more attention to your environment. Make new decisions, use your brain.
  8. Don't Outsource Your Brain. Not to media personalities, not to politicians, not to your smart neighbour... Make your own decisions, and mistakes. And learn from them. That way, you are training your brain, not your neighbour's.
  9. Develop and maintain stimulating friendships. We are "social animals", and need social interaction. Which, by the way, is why 'Baby Einstein' has been shown not to be the panacea for children development.
  10. Laugh. Often.

Commonly Forgotten Items

College Kids,

A few weeks back you had an article on common things students forget to bring to school with them. Do you have any more?

Cindy
18 Years Old
East Gardiner, OR

Cindy,

I consulted the College Kid Brain Trust and came up with a nice list of thing us or friends of ours have forgotten to bring.

Laundry Detergent - Never pay $1 for a loads worth of detergent, never.
Storage Bins - They are always handy to help you stay organized.
Alarm Clock - Because you do need to go to class at least sometimes.
Sandals - Because you do not want to be barefoot in those showers, trust me.
A Sports Related Item - For when you want to go outside and play Football or throw the Frisbee.
Towel - Duhhhhh.
Pictures From Home - They are always nice to have.
Toothbrush Case - So you wont have to worry about it falling on the floor.
Shower Caddy - Helps you keep all your shower stuff together.
Hangers - I seriously do not think anyone remembers these.
Swim Trunks - You never know when you might go swimming.
Finger Nail Clippers - Because your roommate is thinking the same thing you are :"I don't have to bring any, my roommate will".
Plastic Silverware - Very handy.
Fan - September can still be a very hot month.
Cellphone Charger - If you forget to bring this then your phone will die and you will not be able to call mom and have her send it to you.
A Hobby Related Item - You do not want to be stuck at school without your hobby. If you play guitar bring it!

I hope you liked our list! Please tell us if you think of anymore.

Cheers!
